The Dragon House By GilBartolome Architects ($NFS) shows what can be done with a little ingenuity. The home was commissioned by a young couple who had a difficult plot with amazing views. They wanted the home built on the side of a hill with a 42-degree incline with all of the living areas facing the sea. Add a tight budget to the mix and the Architects have their hands full. The form of the house combined with the metallic roof produces the feel of dragon skin when seen from below and waves when seen from above. The house features two floors: a terraced living area with an outdoor swimming pool and a second floor which contains the main sleeping areas.Because of the high unemployment rate in Spain, the owners wanted to use craftsmanship and local labor instead of using machine-made construction systems. The most complex systems in the house, which include the metal formwork, the concrete structure, the tiles, and the interior furniture all used manual labor.Because the house is set into the ground, it maintains a constant 67-degrees year round. Additional building features and construction methods enable the house to operate without any form of heating or cooling during the year.[gallery type="rectangular" ids="22833,22832,22831,22830,22829,22828,22827,22835,22834"]
I really hope this movie is good because the book series by Stephen King is incredible. If you've never heard of The Dark Tower ($TBA), then a little background is needed. Starting in 1982 Stephen King released a series of eight books. The final book was completed in 2012. The story was actually completed after the seventh book "The Dark Tower" and the last book takes place between books four and five. The Gunslinger (1982) The Drawing of the Three (1987) The Waste Lands (1991) Wizard and Glass (1997) Wolves of the Calla (2003) Song of Susannah (2004) The Dark Tower (2004) The Wind Through the Keyhole (2012)The story was inspired by Robert Browning's poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came". It's about Roland Deschain. He is the last living member of a group known as Gunslingers. His world looks similar to the old west but also include magical characteristics. His world is dying. The magic is disappearing as well as many of the technological advances. Nations are being torn apart, cities are vanishing and time is no longer flowing in a predictable manner. The pattern of the sun is even no longer predictable. The series documents Roland's quest to find the Dark Tower. A building that is said to be the center of all universes. He must find the tower to keep his world and all worlds from moving on.The movie stars Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, Katheryn Winnick as Laurie Chambers, Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers and Idris Elba as The Gunslinger. The Dark Tower drops on August 4th. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The older I get the less stuff I buy. But when I do make a purchase it's usually based on either great design or great build quality. In the age of plastic I love things made from sturdy natural materials. The Waterford Mad Men Edition Drinkware Set ($140) fits my philosophy perfectly. Although not cheap, they will make that afternoon whiskey all the more enjoyable. The Drinkware set commemorates the last season of the iconic TV series and pays close attention to the period details to create a set that would right at home in the hands of Don Draper.
