Sicily Kolbeck proves that most teenagers aren't just sitting around twiddling their thumbs. She designed and built her own house, Le Petit Maison ($10,000). Sicily created an Indiegogo campaign last year and raised $1660 towards her project. Her mom was able to foot the rest of the $10,000 cost. The house she created is fully operationally and includes a kitchen, bathroom, reading area, and a sleeping loft. The home looks so amazing, I just might put one up in the back yard.
The New Low-Profile Nike Kobe 9 EM ($160) look like something Bruce Lee might want to wear if he wasn't an Asics man. The new kicks feature an engineered mesh upper which provides lightweight ventilation, a mesh lining that gives you a snug comfortable fit, while the Lunarlon midsole gives you an ultra-soft ride. When the Kobe 9 EM's drop on 3/29 they'll be available in the yellow colorway, but also in a crimson.
Stop the madness! There is no longer any reason to guess the temperature of your steaks. You know this summer at some point you'll have a group of guys over, and orders will come in for medium, rare, medium well, and well and whether you get them right or not will be a shot in the dark. The SteakChamp Thermometer ($50) is looking to wipe out this uncertainty. Just place it in the included cradle to activate, insert sideways into your steak, and cook like normal. A slow flash tells you you're close to being done, a fast double flash tells you to remove the steak and the flashing stops all together when the stea has rested enough. SteakChamps are available in rare, medium rare, medium, and medium well temperatures.
Make no mistake The Book Of Bastards ($14) does not overlook Benedict Arnold, America's first traitor, but he is only one of the 101 bastards in this one of a kind volume dedicated to the Washington bad guys. He is in good company too when you look at some of the gross misconduct within this scarily funny but historically correct book. This is a page turning potboiler of the highest degree as it reveals those dirty little secrets none of us learned about in history class. From illicit trysts to illegitimate children ( who knew Grover Cleveland had it in him) the dirt is well and truly dished here and what a cracking read it is.
This post-apocalyptic thriller was a landmark movie of its time and over three decades later is still hugely watchable. Mel Gibson is Mad Max ($7), an Aussie lawman out to avenge the murders of his wife, child and partner in the barren wasteland that once was Australia. A gang of motorcyclists are responsible for the murders, which they carried out in retaliation at the death of their leader. Directed by George Miller and also starring Joanne Samuel and Hugh Keays-Byrne, this epic tales dishes up more action, thrills and adventure than one movie should be capable of, but it delivers on every level.
