The new NASA Mars Rover Concept Vehicle ($NFS) looks like it came out of the latest post-apocalyptic Mad Max flick. This futuristic concept was recently unveiled at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. They wanted to use it to inspire and educate as NASA gets closer to actually reaching their goals of sending people to the red planet. This concept operates on a 700-volt battery powered by solar panels. The cool part is that it splits in the middle of the chassis. Where the front is designed for scouting with radio and navigation equipment. You know what's better than a whisker bar? A portable whiskey bar, of course. It's not the stuff of legend and dreams as this stylish piece from Louis Vuitton shows. The Louis Vuitton Portable Whiskey Bar ($39K) was built in the 1980's and is a sophisticated and elegant kit that will make you feel right at home wherever you might be. Lined with Epi leather and featuring gold plated studs this retro case is all original with original locks and latches, and it's very own key. But let's get to the good stuff. The interior is lined with a deep green and wondrously grained leather and fitted with everything a whiskey drinker could need. Including a silver mounted whiskey carafe, four high-quality whiskey beakers, and even a thermos-lined ice bucket.
Camping has never been so good. The Sol Duc Cabin ($TBA) located about 66 miles West of Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula is a 350 square foot masterpiece. It was originally built for a client of Olson Kundig Architects, who loves fly-fishing for steelhead. The cabin is clad in steel and features a rugged patina and safe haven from flooding from the nearby river. The owner wanted something that was low-maintenance and virtually indestructible. The large exterior steel panels slide on rails made for barn doors, for security when the cabin is not occupied and for protection against inclimate weather. It has two levels, and rooms including diningroom, kitchen, and sleeping loft. This is prefab at its best.
There are more movies about the Vietnam war than almost any other subject, so it takes something very special to stand out from the crowd. Step forward Platoon ($9), a blood and guts look at the horrors of war through the eyes of a young recruit. Starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Defoe and directed by Oliver Stone, anyone who thinks that war is nothing to get excited about needs to watch this movie as it's the nearest thing to being out in the field yourself.
