Tired of beer, try making your own low-alcohol honey wine using Williams-Sonoma's Mead Making Kit ($60). The kit includes everything you need to make five 1 gallon batches. Actually making the mead is super easy. Just steep 2 to 3 pounds of honey into 1 gallon of water that has been heated to 160 degrees. Pour it into the growler and add the yeast. In 4-6 weeks you'll have a nice alcoholic beverage. The earlier you stop the fermentation the sweeter the mead. If you end up making some let us know what you think.
Everything seems to be flat pack nowadays, but how about a comera? The Pop-up Pinhole Project ($47) looks to raise funds for a medium format flat pack camera kit. Medium format film is larger than standard 35mm and smaller than large format film (102mm x 127mm). It provides a higher level of resolution over common 35mm. The expected delivery date isn't until November, so if you can't wait there are downloadable plans for a 35mm version that can made today using common household items.
The Bollinger B1 All-Electric SUV ($60,000) is the world's first all-electric, all-wheel drive, off/on road sport utility truck. The B1 is a one-off prototype developed, designed, and built by hand in a renovated Hobart, New York repair shop. The goal is to pioneer a new segment of electric off-road SUVs. Currently the company is looking for a builder and is in talks with companies like AM General. As far as specs the B1 is a convertible full cab to half cab, has all wheel-drive and can reach 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. It's motors can produce a top speed of 127 mph, at 360 horses, and with 472 lb-ft of torque. 60kWh and 100kwh battery options will be available providing 120 and 200 miles ranges respectively. The batteries have about a 12 hour charge time. Internally the B1 will give you about 95 cu. ft of cargo capacity.
The Hillside Backpack by George Guest ($265) is unique to say the least. It features a roll top that makes it functional for everyday needs, and is equipped with side access pockets and an organizational front pocket with a sleeve for a notebook and pen to carry those items you need to retrieve quickly. The bag is constructed if 18 oz duck canvas, and has a full-grain leather base and trim. The internal pocket can carry up to a 17" laptop.
Galpin Auto Sports has created a monster of a car. Their Galpin Ford GTR1 ($1 MILLION+) is powered by a mid-mounted, twin-turbo 5.4 liter V8 engine. The V8 generates, wait for it... 1,024 horsepower and 739 foot pounds of torque. Top speed is 225 mph and it can get to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and a 100 mph in 6.8. Only 6 cars will be made to start. If interest is high enough another lot of 24 cars will be made. Production is slated to start early 2014 so get your orders in. I want to see one of these bad boys on the road. Of course check out additional pics after the break.(more…)
The Moment Smartwatch ($190) has a 360 degree touch screen that includes a full QWERTY keyboard. It is also a perfect blend of style and technology. The watch looks like a 1.75" wide bracelet, but under its good looks it has an electrophoretic display, nine axis digital motion sensor, multi-point, gesture enabled, 360 degree touch interface, bluetooth, vibration motor and a battery that will last up to 30 days. The one thing I didn't notice that Apple's iWatch is most likely to include is voice recognition. If they can add that through one of their Snapware module upgrades it will be a real winner. I guess for the price beggars can't be choosers. Check out their Kickstarter campaign which is going on right now
