With most jobs now a days needing some sort of technical training it makes sense to introduce children to concepts at an early age. TinkerBots Educational Robotic building Set ($160+) does just that. It makes it possible for young kids and adults to create a number of robotic toys just by clicking pieces together like Legos. The kit features a power brain block, kinetic modules, and passive pieces. You can even add your own lego blocks to make your creations even more complex. The power brain block provides the power and contains an Arduino-compatible microcontroller. Snap that with the other pieces to create your toy and you're ready to go. Your toy can be controlled by either recording movements and playing them back or by your android or iOS device. There are multiple kits available including wheeler, animal, and grabber kits. You can check out all the purchase options on their Indiegogo campaign.
It has been said that there is nothing lovelier than a tree, and Bryan Nash Gill, the Connecticut-based artist aims to prove this with his stunning book, Woodcut ($23). By creating large-scale, relief prints from cross sections of trees, Nash Gill reveals the sublime power that is locked inside those arboreal rings. He creates patterns that are not only beautiful but are also year-by-year timelines of lives of these damaged or fallen logs. The wood used he has rescued himself from the neighboring lands around his studio before extracting and preparing blocks of various tree species including maple, ash, oak, willow and spruce before creating his unique prints.
Joey Roth is one of our favorite speaker designers and he's gotten together with Grovemade to help design the Grovemade Wood Speakers ($599). The speakers harness the acoustic properties of wood and create beautifully clear and nuanced sound. The speakers are machined out of solid wood and are mounted on a leather clad stainless steel stands. The wood enclosure isn't just for looks. It is carved into a horn with precise dimensions in order to provide the very best sound. The horn shape provides a boost to the lower frequencies while removing distortion caused by digital signal processing, and standard bass reflex enclosures. Each of these speakers is hand crafted one at a time at Grovemade's Portland, Oregon workshop.
