Once in awhile a product, although not for sale, is simply too beautiful not to write about. The O-bow ($TBA) is an electronic musical instrument. Using a standard bow or even a wooden stick, changes in the midi are produced via an optical sensor which measures the bow speed and horizontal angle with high resolution. To play you will need a midi keyboard to produce the string sound and the O-bow would add the bow flavor. There is no word yet on whether this device will ever hit the market, but I'm hoping we will see a Kickstarter for it soon. Check out this [video_lightbox_youtube video_id= 4L4cr80vT5Q width=640 height=480 anchor=video] of the O-bow in action.

Eric Schlosser, the renowned investigative journalist has dug deep to discover secrets about how America's nuclear arsenal is actually managed. Command & Control ($20) is a ground breaking and at times disturbing account of near misses, accidents, supreme heroism and major technological breakthroughs, this book explores the dilemma that has been in existence since the nuclear age dawned; how exactly do you deploy WMD's, weapons of mass destruction, without actually being destroyed by them yourselves? This question has never been resolved, we don't know if it ever will, but one thing is for certain; Schlosser and revealed how the lethal combination of technological complexity and human fallibility still poses a very grave threat to mankind.
Design is about taking the conventions we're all accustomed to and transforming them into something new and unique. The Ressence Type 3 ($30,000) does this in spades. Filled with a special liquid, the dial tricks the brain into seeing in two-dimensions rather than three. What you end up with is a watch face that looks as though it's displayed directly on the crystal similar to a projection screen. The traditional watch hands and crown were removed to make the watch as minimalistic as possible. Procedures like winding and changing the settings are accomplished by turning the case back. The Ressence Type 3 will be available for purchase sometime in late summer.
