Tis‘ the season for the best men’s sweatshirts. In this article, I’ll be talking about crewneck sweatshirts, but if you’re like me you live in your crewneck or hoodie. There is nothing more comfortable than a quality well-fitting sweatshirt.
In my Best Sweatshirts for Men guide, I’m going to show you not only the best sweatshirts available but also how to wear them. I’ve included some of the top brands below for every price range. Whether grabbing something from a local retailing for a weekend getaway or you want a garment that is truly special, I’ve got you covered.
The first batch of sweatshirts is of the budget rack. But don’t let the price fool you. These are still quality heavyweights that you’re sure to enjoy. One of my daily wears is an H&M sweatshirt that’s holding strong after months of continuous use.
If you’re looking for an affordable sweatshirt, look no further than the H&M Relaxed Fit Sweatshirt ($25). It features dropped shoulders, with ribbing at the neckline, cuffs, and hem. H&M brushed the inside for long wear comfortability. The H&M sweatshirt features 65% cotton and 35% polyester.
My Favorite Colors: Charcoal Grey & Black
Uniqlo is one of my favorite budget shopping spots. You can get great quality clothing at an excellent price point. Their Uniqlo Sweatshirt ($30) coming in at 30 bucks is no different. Uniqlo made the sweatshirt from a thick fleece-lined densely woven material. They redesigned the shoulders and sleeves for a slim look while providing a loose feel. They made the sweatshirt from 100% cotton.
Best Colors: Light Gray, Gray, Black, Dark Green, Navy
Farnol is a London based company along the lines of Uniqlo. They provide great clothing at excellent prices. Their men’s Farnol Everyday Crew Neck Sweatshirt (£30) offering contains 100% long staple cotton which holds its shape and resists pilling. It also features a traditional bound-on rib neck and flatlock seams for added strength and durability. These sweatshirts do fit small than expected, so makes sure to size up for a comfortable fit.
Best Colors: Black, Grey, Off White, Navy
I have a couple pieces from COS and their stuff is great. The COS Raglan-Sleeved Sweatshirt ($69) has oversized proportions for a very comfortable fit. Nobody wants to feel restricted in a sweatshirt. As the name states it comes with raglan sleeves, a round neck, and wide ribbed hem and cuffs. If you’re feeling a little adventurous go for the Midnight Blue.
Best Colors: Midnight Blue, Black
J. Crew is bringing their ‘A’ game with the J. Crew Washed French Terry Crewneck Sweatshirt ($70). French terry is soft and stretchy material. Contructed from two separate yarns which combine to create a super soft fabric and a sweatshirt that looks great on both the inside and the outside. J. Crew constructed this crewneck from 100%, and features rib trim at the neck, cuffs, and hem.
Best Colors: Navy
Buck Mason makes great clothing and their version of the French Terry sweatshirt is no different. The Buck Mason Vintage French Terry Raglan Sweatshirt ($78) features pre-washed Vintage French Terry fabric for a soft worn-in feel. It also has Raglan sleeves where the sleeve hem goes all the way to the collar for a broad range of movement in the shoulder and arm. Built in the USA from domestic materials.
Best Colors: Heather Gray, Army, Black
Here is another sweatshirt with Raglan sleeves for that increased range of motion that we discussed earlier. The A Days March Raglan Sweatshirt ($85) features include a 100% organic, 320g loopback cotton fabric in a nice array of colors. As with most of these high-quality sweatshirts, machine wash cold and don’t tumble dry. This will make sure the colors don’t fade and you’ll enjoy many years of wear from your sweatshirt.
Best Colors: Black, Dutch Blue, Grey Melange, Navy
Unrecorded is also offering a great organic heavyweight crew neck sweatshirt. The Unrecorded Crew Neck Sweatshirt (€75) features 100% organic cotton which is GOTS certified. The French terry knit fabric weighs a hefty 360 grams and will last for years. If you love the environment you’ll love that fact the cotton Unrecorded uses is grown in soil free of toxic pesticides and fertilizers. Also, their fabric is dyed and finished without the use of heavy metals or allergenic disperse dyes. Built in Braga, Portugal. As with other sweatshirts make sure to hang dry.
Best Colors: Grey, Navy, Black, Green
I love all the gear by Asket. Their take on classic clothing is borderline perfect. The Asket Sweatshirt ($95) is no different. They’ve taken the classic American style sweatshirt and stripped it down to just the essentials. Asket constructed their sweatshirt from unbrushed Egyptian cotton, cut to a tailored yet extremely comfortable fit, and pre-shrunk for proper sizing. The cotton used is dense and weighs in at 380g/sqm.
The sweatshirt features a soft unbrushed loopback interior, ribbing at the hems, cuffs, and a reinforced neckline containing lycra for optimal retention, and set-in sleeves. Whether you’re hanging out at home or headed out for the evening this is a great piece that’ll fit almost any occasion. Asket designed their sweatshirt in Stockholm and built it in Reguenga, Portugal.

This sweatshirt from Alex Mill is another one my list containing 100% super soft french terry cotton. The Alex-Mill French Terry Sweatshirt($125) is pre-washed for softness guarding against shrinkage. Additional features include v-insert detailing at the neck, and ribbing at the cuff and bottom hem.
Best Colors: Silver Pine, Brick, Washed Black, Natural, Navy
Kestin Hare has a unique take on modern staples. The Kestin Hare Haymarket Sweatshirt (£99) is no different. The sweatshirt is made from a lightweight garment-dyed woven cotton. Unlike the other sweatshirts on my list, it has large side entry kangaroo pockets, to keep your hands nice an toasty. Additional features include raglan sleeves, ribbed cuffs, hem, and collar. Kestin Hares says the Haymarket is one of their best sellers.

All of the other sweatshirts on our list contain cotton, and possibly another material. The NWKC Crew Sweatshirt ($130) has a face layer featuring the companies merino wool 19.5 micron, 9.9 ounce dual cloth. Exclusively knit for NWKC by the industry leading textile manufacturer Coville in North Carolina.
One created the fabric is sent to New York’s famous Garment District to be cut and sewn. Final finishing touches take place back n NWKC’s hometown of Minneapolis.
Their modern take on sweatshirts has a classic cut that’s roomy, raglan sleeves, cover stitched seams and a ribbed inset at the waist. The face layer is the 100% wool dual cloth, while the reverse layer contains 40% Cotton & 60% Polyester. Made all over the U.S.A.

I personally own three Sunspel sweatshirts and I love them. The Sunspel Cotton Loopback Sweatshirt ($135) are a modern take on the classic athletic sweatshirt. They have a trim fit and refined modern detailing. It’s made from a 100% cotton soft loopback fabric with an internal loop stitch for insulation and warmth. Additional features include a v-stitch insert at the neck and ribbing at the cuffs made from 95%, 5% Elastane. You can also get Sunspels matching sweatpants for a full set. Again as will most of the sweatshirts on the list you’re better off drying on a hanger to keep your sweatshirt in great shape for years to come.
Best Colors: Grey Melange, Navy Melange, Black, Archive White, Charcoal Melange, Navy, Deep Petrol
This is a beautiful sweatshirt by Filippa. As with most of their other gear, the Filippa K Twill Sweatshirt Dark Navy ($165) sweatshirt has a neat modern fit. It’s made from a 100% BCI cotton blend that’s been turned inside out. Additional features include edges made from a contrasting fabric with decorative stripe detailing, and a neckline with an internal herringbone ribbon.
Best Color: Dark Navy
So why is the Handvaerk Varsity Sweatshirt, well probably because it’s handmade. You should expect to pay more for any clothing that’s made in this manner. The Handvaerk Varsity Sweatshirt ($195) is made from an exceptionally soft, yet structured, loopback French Terry fabric with a class v-stitch at the neck. The French terry fabric is itself made from the finest Peruvian Pima cotton. This sweatshirt is cut semi-fitted, but is still great for layering with your favorite shirts and t-shirts. As far as care, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, hang to dry.
Best Colors: Black, Dark Brown, Navy, Grey Melange, Sand
What color sweatshirt should you buy? – The first colors you should buy are grey, black, and charcoal grey. You’ll get the most use of these and they’ll pretty much go with anything. After those colors I would add a beige or a brown for a nice contrast, and then from there you can starting adding light blues, and reds to add some interest to your wardrobe.
How should a sweatshirt fit? – Sweatshirts are meant for casual wear, but you’ll want to dress it up occasionally so it needs to fit correctly. The first thing is to make sure you have the proper length. Too long and it looks like you’re trying to hide something and too short looks like you stuck in the 80s where half shirts were fashionable for dudes. Your sweatshirt should hit right below your belt line for a perfect fit. As with dress shirts, the sleeves should hit right at the top your hand if you have a bent wrist.
What can you wear with sweatshirts? – The reason I love sweatshirts is because contrary to popular belief they can be worn with a whole lot more than just jeans. Like I said above you can dress them up or down depending on your mood. One of my favorite outfits is to pair my sweatshirt with my favorite pair of wool pants, a trench or overcoat and a crisp pair of white sneaks or derbys. If you get the colors right you’ll look clean as heck. Below I’ve list some of my favorite outfits. You can see more on my Instagram page.
