Apple had its big reveal today detailing new features with the Apple 5s ($199-$399). Although there is nothing earth shattering the three new features should make for a much improved user experience. The major features include updated processors, updated camera, and new security system. Complete details after the break.
New Processor: The A7 is 64-bit processor, has 2x the general-purpose registers, 2x the floating-point registers, and over 1 billion transistors. It runs both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. iOS 7 and its built-in apps have been developed to take advantage of the new 64-bit architecture. The A7 is 2x’s faster than its previous processor.
New Motion Processor: The M7 motion processor continuously measures motion data and includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and a compass. It will allow development of improved health and fitness apps. The M7 is able to identify user movement and has contextual awareness, meaning it can tell whether your running or driving a car.
Camera System: The new iPhone camera uses a larger, f/2.2 aperture, and has a 15% larger active sensor area. Bigger pixels equal better pictures so iPhone has increased their cameras pixel size to 1.5 microns. The camera automatically sets light balance, and exposure. It also has autofucs matrix metering with 15 focus zones. What this means is when you take a picture the camera chooses the sharpest from multiple pictures. The new flash has two LEDs one white, and one amber, measures lighting in the room and adjusts the flash accordingly. A brand new burst mode allows your to take up to 10 frames per second when you hold your finger on the shutter. Also a new SloMo app allows you to shoot HD video at 120 frames per second.
Security: The Touch ID sensor built into the home button reads your epidermal skin layers and allows you to unlock your phone just by touching the home button. The iPhone 5s can be setup to read multiple finger prints and all fingerprint data is encrypted and locked by the A7 chip.
The iPhone 5S will be available in silver, gold and ‘space’ grey, and will cost $199 for 16GB, $299 FOR 32GB, and $399 for 64GB models with a 2 year contract. The iPhone 5S will go on sale on September 20th.
