Fogo: The Ultimate Adventure Multi-Tool ($200) allows you to take one device on your adventures that does absolutely everything. It contains the three major tools every active person should have; GPS, walkie-talkie, and a flashlight. All in a waterproof light-weight package.
The GPS also contains a motion tracker and digital compass. It will determine points of interest and detect other people in your vicinity. When you’re on the move the Fogo will show your speed and heading, and if you stray form your path the Smartlight will blink to get you back on course.
Now add other Fogo users and you can send voice and text messages and share locations.
The rechargeable battery comes with a backup USB charger so you can charge smartphone or other smaller devices.
The custom smartcap interface allows you to expand the Fogo’s capabilities, like the walkie talkie. Right now they’re working on a satellite modem and laser range finder.
Everything is smart about this device, including the flashlight. The Fogo can automatically adjust the flashlights brightness based on where it’s pointed. Using low-beam for the ground in front of you and high-beam for distant objects. It also blinks automatically when dropped. The Smarlight also adjusts based on speed, lighting conditions, estimated trip duration, and remaining battery life.
But don’t get too comfortable because it also has fitness capabilities. The Fogo tracks distance, heart rate, elevation, ascent, descent, and speed. It can connect to bluetooth heart rate monitors and cadence sensors. And if you crash it can automatically send out a message to other Fogo users in the area.
And lastly, you don’t ever have to worry about running out of battery life. The screen displays how much battery life is left at any give time. And you can manage battery life by setting an estimated trip duration.
And if the Fogo doesn’t do something you want it to, you can develop your own apps with the Fogo’s SDK.
The only thing the Fogo doesn’t do is wipe your butt for you.
There’s nothing worse than camping, boing out on the trail, or doing an urban hike through your favorite city when you realize your cell phone has run out of juice.
