Packable down jackets for men are a great option during the winter. They make up a necessary part of any winter wardrobe. They’re lighter than their bigger siblings but still offer excellent warmth. Some of the jackets on this list have a fill power rating up to 900, which is great for any jacket.
But the main reason to get one of these jackets is for their convenience. Whether you’re boarding a plane or taking a walk, the ability to stuff your jacket into a small pack is a great option. Some of these jackets even have an interior pocket you can pack them in to. So you don’t have to worry about losing a separate bag.
Before we jump into the list let’s answer some relevant questions.
A packable down jacket is a down jacket that you can store away. These jackets will fold into a backpack or suitcase without adding too much weight. While any down jacket will be very light, most can’t fold into small areas for those times you don’t need it.
Down jackets are in style in the sense that they are never out of style. These items are too practical and too useful to ever go out of circulation!
There are a few ways you can style a down jacket. One is to lean into the practical aspect. Pair it with a thick knitted sweater or flannel shirt, along with heavy boots and rugged jeans. Another option is to go for an urban look. Choose a hoodless down jacket and match it with a beanie and hoodie. Down vests also work well worn this way. Finally, a down jacket can look smarter if you choose a thinner style with no hood. Wear it over the top of an oxford shirt and chinos for a great look.
A down jacket is generally considered to be a more casual look. The best down jackets are more about keeping you warm and dry than helping you to look professional. That said, there are woolier jackets that will work with office attire. And these are also a good option for your commute.
A jacket designed to be waterproof and warm, and is better worn in the winter months.
The Canada Goose Brookvale ($500) is the most expensive on our list. I had to include it because Canada Goose is a great brand and makes excellent products. The Brookvale comes in hooded and no hood version. It is one of the down jackets on the list that packs into its own interior mesh pocket. This means you can bring it with you on long trips, or out on the town. The power fill rating comes in at 750 fill power making it suitable for all but the coldest conditions. It’s still a thin and light down jacket that’s flexible and won’t weigh you down. Extra features include a 2-way front zipper and an adjustable drawcord on the hem. It comes in many colors and patterns.
The North Face Men’s Thermoball Eco Hoodie ($200) is a very popular and affordable packable down jacket. It has packable down. And the outer shell has a good looking grid pattern. It looks urban and modern at the same time. While also being very lightweight and practical. It will stand up to any weather, and stand the test of time. This is the kind of jacket you can bring camping, wear to the gym, or take for a stroll around town after dark. And of course, it packs up into a backpack. You’ll hardly know it’s there! The North Face offers the Thermoball in many colors.
Marmot makes a wide range of insulated puffer jackets. We love their Calen Men’s Insulated Puffer Jacket ($160). This one has a practical zip pocket at an angle. A collar for helping to block out wind, and nylon ripstop fabric that will stand the test of time. It’s warm yet breathable and easy to pack. And we like the sheen on this one. It will stand out and give you a more premium look. The puffer also comes in a variety of colors, including a bright cobalt blue that stands out. Bear in mind that the “Jet Black” isn’t particularly black but is closer to a light gray!
We love the ARC-TERYK brand and their Cerium line of jackets, hoodies, and vests. The Arc’teryx Cerium LT Men’s Hoody ($379) is another winner. It’s lightweight, very warm, and brilliant quality. The 850 fill consists of European white goose down. While the shell is 100% Arato nylon. It’s expensive but well worth the price. It’s a packable down jacket you can wear it in a range of situations. and it should last a long time.
Uniqlo has a wide range of puffers, vests, and other light outer layers. We love their Uniqlo Men’s Ultra-Light Down Jacket ($70). It comes in a variety of colors but is otherwise a very classic and “by the numbers” design. The quality here is excellent. And a recent update has brought the waist to create a slimmer and more flattering silhouette. It also comes in a vest version.
Looking for a practical packable down jacket? The Amazon Essentials Men’s Puffer Jacket ($39) should definitely be on your list. For one, this jacket is affordable, especially compared with some others on this list. The value here is crazy! Moreover, this not only packs very small but even comes with a small pouch to store it in. This is not high fashion. You can see the seams a little more clearly, and the material doesn’t have a premium look or feel. BUT it is still a good looking jacket with a nice finish. And that’s pretty amazing considering the price and its packability.
Feathered Friends make a wide range of winter wear. They’re designed to be practical and warm for outdoorsy types. The Eos Men’s Down Jacket ($339) is a great looking modern choice. It’s aptly named for the goddess of the down. They designed it for those early morning starts that need an extra layer of insulation. It comes in three modern colors with some cool features. It’s warm, it’s light, and it packs easily. A perfect addition to your outwear selection. This jacket is a little more expensive than others on this list. And is larger due to the high fill rating of a whopping 900+. Making this the warmest winter jacket on our list.
The Rab Neutrino Packable Down Jacket ($265) is another great mid-range option. It features an 800-fill hydrophobic down. Hydrophobic down provides equal warmth to other downs but retains its loft when wet. It also dries quicker. They made the shell from Pertex Quantum fabric treated with DWR. This gives it superior water-repellent attributes. The adjustable hood is large enough to fit over helmets and offers a snug secure fit. The Neutrino comes with a sack you can pack the jacket into. I would love it if they added a packable interior pocket instead.
With a name like Ghost Whisperer ($299), you might expect this to be a cool packable down jacket. You wouldn’t be wrong! The brand calls this jacket the “World’s lightest full-featured hooded down jacket.” It weighs less than 8 ounces and compresses into its own pocket. The quilted pattern has a low profile. This helps to keep heat trapped. And despite the slim look, it’s actually very warm. Featuring down with an 800-fill power rating which resists moisture. More features include butter-soft jersey cuffs to seal out moisture. And an adjustable hem.
I love this jacket from Eddie Bauer. The Eddie Bauer Men’s CirrusLite Down Jacket ($60) is almost perfect. Not only is it packable but it has a 650 fill power rating. Providing protection down to -10 degrees. The nylon shell features the brands StormRepel DWR water-resistant finish. Shedding moisture and providing protection for the underlying fabric. The shell has a quilted pattern and comes in a handful of colors. Best of all, you get a designer name like Eddie Bauer for a very reasonable price. If you want a premium, modern, quilted-jacket look, but you don’t want to break the bank, this is a brilliant choice.
