Leesa Mattress Review

So I was real excited about this one. A couple weeks ago Leesa ($525-$990) reached out and asked us to check out one of their mattresses. They also wanted us to take a look at the overall ordering experience. But before we get into it lets try to understand why a good mattress is so important.

Why is a mattress important?

When you consider that you spend a third of your life asleep, getting a good mattress might be one of the most important purchases you make. Continual lack of sleep causes chronic illnesses such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.
A good mattress must address many issues. First, it must keep you cool. As the night goes on, we all notice we feel warmer as our bodies continue to sink into the mattress. If a bed doesn’t help dissipate heat, you’ll wake up in the middle of the night and may find it hard to get back to sleep.
Second, it must be able to support the curves of the body without putting a lot of pressure on different areas. Mattresses that fail to do this can eventually lead to back problems, and muscle and neck aches. This is particularly true of softer mattresses that fail to provide the support necessary to keep the body’s joints in a natural posture.

What is Leesa?

Leesa is a 100% online, 100% American-made, mattress company based out of Virginia Beach, Va and their goal is simple – “To Help People Sleep Better.” The idea was the result of David Wolfe, a serial entrepreneur getting together with a mattress industry vet. This partnership led to a mattress that, “from the inside out, feels as good as it looks.” After several iterations, they were able to achieve finally a product that provides a great nights sleep to all types of body shapes, and all kinds of sleepers.

Leesa Mattress Box Spring | What’s In A Leesa Mattress?

To Start, there is no box spring needed when you buy your Leesa Mattress. It can go right on your platform bed without a problem. So what was the result of all their testing and design work? The final product is a 10″, three layered mattress, with a luxury outer covering. With each layer having a specific job.
The Bottom Layer is made up of a 6″ Dense Core Support Foam, which adds the strength, durability, and structure to the mattress. No matter your size this layer will support you.
The 4-inch top layer is made up of two layers. A middle comprised of 2 inches of contouring memory foam and the top which is made up of 2 inches of cooling Avena foam.
The contouring layer of the Leesa mattress does what the name implies – contours to the body to relieve the pressure you typically get from memory foam mattresses. While the top layer provides the bounce and air flow for that necessary cooling during the night, we talked about earlier.
When you combine these two, you get what every sleeper needs – just enough support, with just the right amount of pressure relief, without that memory foam sinking feeling or issues with overheating.

Leesa vs Casper

The main difference between Leesa and Casper is the firmness of the mattresses. Casper is made from 4 foam layers with a final height of 9.5″. The Leesa mattress is made from 3 foam layers with a final height of 10″. If I were to describe firmness on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being very firm the Casper would be a 7 and the Leesa a 6 on the scale. So all other things excluded, if you were looking for a firmer mattress I would go with the Casper. If you like a slightly less firm mattress I would go with the Leesa.

The Leesa Ordering Process – As Refined As Their Mattresses

When you go to Leesa’s online store, the first thing you notice is the streamlined ordering process. Just like their mattress, they kept things simple.

The ordering page consists of a list of different mattress sizes (with measurements) and prices; that’s it.

Leesa Mattress Price

The Leesa costs from $525-$990 and sizes range from twin to California king. Leesa is a luxury foam mattress, and when I did a quick check online, the majority of the beds in this category ran anywhere between $1500 and $7500.
Another great feature is on the payment page. In addition to standard credit cards, they also accept Paypal. Making buying online even easier. From the time, I placed my order to the moment my Leesa was delivered took only five days from start to finish.

Unpacking Experience

The day finally came when my Leesa arrived. The box itself is a 15.5″ square with a height of 44.5 inches. It weighs about 70 lbs, so if you’re on the petite side, I’d get some help. That being said I was able to bear hug it to the bottom of the stairs and slide it on up. Once in the bedroom I just opened up one side of the square tube and slid it on out.
The instruction card that comes with the mattress is straightforward, just five steps. 1. Unbox, 2. Position, 3. Unwrap, 4. Expand, and 5. Sleep.
Lifting it onto the old box spring by myself was easy, but the unwrapping took a bit of muscle. The mattress roll has a wrap, and the mattress has a second plastic wrap keeping it compressed. So when you remove the outer layer, the mattress unrolls to cover your platform. At this point, you can get to the mattress wrap, which I opened on one end and slide off the bed.
After taking off the last of the plastic, the Leesa quickly expanded. Although there was a slight odor, it dissipated within a few minutes. This was about 9:00 p.m. and when I came back upstairs at 10 pm the Leesa was ready for Its first test run.

Sleeping experience on Leesa Mattress

Before I put the sheets on I had to try out this new mattress. The premium cover drew my attention right away. It’s very nice. So nice in fact I was a little upset at having to throw sheets on it. It has this ribbing that reminded me of one of my favorite sweaters and was just as soft. If Leesa decided to make a sheet set out of just the bed covering material, they’d make a killing.
As I was laying on my back taking everything in, I started dosing off. Getting up at this point and getting the sheets on the bed was probably the hardest part of this entire process.
After getting the bed dressed, I laid back down for my first night sleep. First impressions – I would put this mattress in the medium to firm category. There is definite support, but with a nice layer of softness.
I prefer to sleep on my back, so this was the first position I tried. I immediately noticed how it aligned my spine. Allowing my butt to sink in a bit while supporting my lower back at the same time. My previous mattress didn’t do this which was causing me to toss and turn during the night.
Laying on my front was a very similar experience. Just enough support with just enough give for a comfortable posture. On my normal mattress, my back would arch down just enough to cause me some lower back pain. The Leesa straightened this arch resolving that issue.
On my side, I noticed a little more pressure around the hip and shoulder area, but still comfortable enough for a good nights sleep.
Throughout the night I tossed and turned much less than usual, but the biggest difference was waking up with out my normal lower back pain. None at all. Which was amazing.
Each consecutive night the Leesa got more and more comfortable. I’m not sure if it was me getting used to it or part of the breaking in process. But the only way I can describe it is the mattress simply disappeared.
Now my wife, who is tiny, likes her mattresses extremely soft. She likes the Leesa but wishes it had a little more give. So to accommodate her, we’re going to look at adding an ultra plush mattress pad. I just hope it doesn’t take away all the benefits I’m getting from the bare mattress. I’ll update this article, once we’ve had a chance to test it out.
