There are superhero movies, then there are the upper echelon of outstanding pieces of cinema, and The Dark Knight ($10) belongs in the latter. Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart and the late great Heath Ledger who picked up a posthumous Oscar for his role as the demonic joker, this movie ticks every box when it comes to creating a movie based on a superhero that even comic book fans want to see. Dark, brooding and returning to the roots of the Batman story where Gotham has a dark and seedy underbelly of crime and deprivation, The Dark Knight will help to erase the memory of the previous Batman movies that have fallen well short of the mark.
