I can’t believe this hasn’t been done already, but Europe is about to get its first underwater restaurant. The project is called Under ($TBA) and will be designed by the Norwegian Architectural firm Snohetta. It will be a concrete structure made to become part of the marine life.
The outer concrete shell will have a coarse surface that invites mussels to cling to it eventually becoming an artificial reef. It will act as a water purifier and attract more marine life to its waters. When the restaurant is closed it will be used as a marine biology research center where research teams will study marine biology and fish behavior.
The restaurant will rest on the floor of the ocean 15 feet below the surface. When completed it will have three levels, a wardrobe area at the entry, a champagne bar in the middle section that marks the transition to underwater, and lastly the seabed level restaurant that will feature a 36-foot wide 13-foot tall panoramic window.
Under will hold approximately 100 people and is expected to be completed sometime in early 2019.
